Once the menacing Spiderus Reeves is out of the picture, the story brightens considerably, and kids will likely prefer this part of the book: There are fun details about the spider wedding ("June beetles spin in pirouettes,/and clickbugs clack like castanets"), a lovely picture of a golden Miss Spider in in her spider web veil, and a certain sweetness as Miss Spider cherishes finding "the place where love abides." The author uses words like "co-webitate" - and a lovesick Holley daydreams of Miss Spider, "Envisioning her fine assets, / Her gentle curves, her spinnerets." They were typically split by a company, DC Comics or Marvel, and I have always had a soft spot for DC when it comes to the periodicals. When I was first collecting comics, I would eagerly save up $10 and purchase one of the grab bag boxes offered up in the Sears catalog. ![]() With the release and overwhelmingly positive response to the Wonder Woman film, I thought it would be interesting to go back to a run on the comic book that has always felt definitive to me. Keefe steals the majority of the book, delivering his standard comedic responses to everything. You’ll find yourself caring much more about the external events because of the time used to endear you to the characters. The stars of the entire Keeper of the Lost Cities series are the characters and their relationships. It is more of a character-focused, suspenseful story than thrills and chases. The same mystery and intrigue laces every page. ![]() ![]() The plot of Exile is less intense than Keeper, but it is no less interesting. Sophie is, once, again, called upon to uncover hidden memories and save someone close to her. She even uses her telepathic powers to find a female alicorn-the rarest animal in the world.īut her kidnappers are still at large, and the Black Swan continue to leave cryptic messages. After a year of living in the world of the elves, surrounded by her friends, everything is starting to feel normal. Plotįinally settled into her home at Havenfield, Sophie-now thirteen-thought she was safe. It takes some time off the high-intensity finale of book one and spends time with the characters.
